FAQ

Common questions.

What is the passport index?

A ranking of passports by where they can take you. For each passport we show the places it can enter visa-free, with an online pass, with a visa on arrival or only with a visa, from each country's own official list.

Which passport is the most powerful?

In the 73 places we have checked so far, Singapore tops our index with 202 points. See the full ranking for every passport.

How is the score worked out?

Each place a passport can enter gives points: 3 visa-free, 2 with an online pass first, 1 with a pass only if you qualify, 1 with a visa on arrival and 0 if you need a visa. Your own country never counts. Working holiday visas show on each passport page but are not in the score.

How many countries have you checked?

73 of 199 places so far, each on its own official government page. We add more as we check them, and every page shows the date we last checked its source.

What is an online pass?

A travel pass you apply for online before you go, like the US ESTA, the UK ETA, Canada's eTA or New Zealand's NZeTA. It is quicker than a visa, but you still need it before you board.

Where does the data come from?

Only from official government pages: each country's own visa list, law or foreign ministry page. Every place links to its source. Rules change, so check the official page before you travel.

Sources

Every fact comes from the official government page of the place you are going to. The data is free to use: entry.json.
