The basics
How a student visa works.
A student visa lets you live in a country while you study there full time, usually at a university or college. It runs for your course and often lets you work part time.
- You need a place at a school first, usually a letter of admission.
- 20 of the 42 have a tuition rule: pay it before you apply, or show you can pay it.
- You must show money to live on. 24 of the 42 set a figure; the rest check it case by case.
- Most also ask for health insurance and a passport that lasts your whole stay.
- 41 of the 42 let you work part time while you study, most with a weekly limit in term time.
- 38 of the 42 let you stay on after you graduate to look for work.
- A language course on its own can lead to a student permit in 17 of the 42.

What is a student visa?
A residence permit or long-stay visa that lets you live in a country while you study there full time, usually at a university or college. Most ask for a place at a school, money to live on and health insurance.

Can I work while I study?
41 of the 42 countries in our list let students work. Most set a weekly limit in term time, from 15 to 30 hours. Each country page shows the rule.
Can I stay after I graduate?
38 of the 42 let you stay on after your studies to look for work. The longest: Canada and New Zealand, up to 3 years.
Can every passport apply?
Most of these visas are open to any passport. In the EU, citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland do not need one, as they can already live and study there.
