The short version
- Americans can visit Costa Rica without a visa and stay up to 180 days.
- The migration officer at the border sets your days. It can be fewer than 180, and never past the date your passport runs out.
- You show a ticket out and proof of at least USD 100 for each month of your stay.
- The 180 days cannot be extended. To stay longer, you need a permit, such as the pensioner residence or the remote worker stay.
How long can Americans stay in Costa Rica?
Up to 180 days, with no visa. Costa Rica's migration agency, the DGME, puts the United States in the first group of its visa rules, published in the official gazette, La Gaceta, on 17 November 2025. The first group enters without a visa and can stay up to 180 calendar days. We read the rules on 26 October 2026.
A few details from the same rules:
- US territories count too. Puerto Rico is in the first group. So are Guam, the US Virgin Islands and American Samoa, for people travelling on a US passport.
- Visiting, not working. As a tourist you can rest, travel, and do business or professional activities, as long as nothing earns pay or profit inside Costa Rica.
- New rules. They took effect on publication and replaced the rules from October 2023.
Do Americans need a visa for Costa Rica?
No. US citizens are in the group the rules call "entry without a visa". You still show a few things at the border, and the rules list them:
| What you show | The rule |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid, in good shape and machine readable |
| Money | At least USD 100 for each month of your stay, or part of a month |
| Ticket | A ticket home, or on to your next stop |
| Record | No ban on entering Costa Rica |
For a six-month stay, that means proof of at least USD 600. The first group has the shortest passport rule: one day of validity is the minimum. But the stay you get will not run past the date your passport expires.
Who sets how many days you get?
The migration officer who checks you in. Costa Rica's visa regulation, quoted in the 2025 rules, says the first group's stay is what the entry officer decides. It can never be more than 180 calendar days from the day you arrive.
So 180 is the most you can get, not a promise. Three things shape the number:
- The officer. They decide at the desk, within the 180-day cap.
- Your passport. Your stay cannot be longer than the time left on it.
- Your money. The rules tie the money you show to the length of your stay.
Check the date you were given before you leave the airport or border post. That date, not the 180-day maximum, is when you need to leave.
Can you extend your stay in Costa Rica?
Usually not. The 2025 rules say the first group's 180 days cannot be extended. The one exception is a stay of fewer than 90 days, which can be extended up to a maximum of 90 days.
Costa Rica's General Migration Law sets out how. A tourist given fewer than 90 days can ask for more time before the first stay runs out, and must show enough money to live on. The law puts the cost at USD 100.
Staying past your date has a price. The same law sets a fine of USD 100 for each month of irregular stay. If you do not pay it, you can be barred from entering for three times as long as you overstayed.
How can you live in Costa Rica longer?
With a residence or a long-stay permit. Costa Rica's General Migration Law gives temporary residence for more than 90 days and up to 2 years, and it can be renewed for the same length. Pensioners and people with a steady income (rentistas) are two of the groups it names. A 2021 law added a stay for remote workers.
| Permit | Money each month | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Pensioner | A pension from abroad of USD 1,000 or more | Up to 2 years, renewable |
| Steady income | USD 2,500 or more, from abroad or Costa Rican banks | Up to 2 years, renewable |
| Remote worker stay | USD 3,000 from abroad, or USD 4,000 with family | 1 year, plus 1 more |
After 3 years in a row of temporary residence, the law lets you apply for permanent residence. The remote worker stay works differently. Its rules ask for a health policy with at least USD 50,000 of cover, and to renew, you need to have spent at least 180 days in Costa Rica.
The law also lets visitors ask to change category while they are in Costa Rica, for a USD 200 fee. The 2025 rules say tourists may ask for that change, under the law's requirements.
