The short version

  • Americans can visit Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days.
  • This rule started on 15 September 2026. Before that, US citizens could stay up to 60 days.
  • To stay longer, you need a visa. The main ones are the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote work, the O-A for people aged 50 or over, and the ED visa for study.
  • Thailand says these measures can change, so check the date on any rule you rely on.

How long can Americans stay in Thailand?

Up to 30 days, with no visa. Since 15 September 2026, US passport holders are on Thailand's list of 60 countries and territories that get a 30-day visa exemption.

The list comes from Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Its chart "Visa Exemption Measures (for holders of ordinary passports)" is posted on the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles page, which was last updated on 14 September 2026. We read it on 18 October 2026.

The chart says the 30 days are "unilaterally granted". That means Thailand gives them on its own, not through a deal with the US. The chart also says the measures are subject to change.

Did the visa-free stay in Thailand get shorter?

Yes. From 15 July 2024, US citizens could stay up to 60 days without a visa. The Los Angeles consulate's 2024 notice said so, and gave the 60 days to people from 93 countries and territories.

The new scheme from 15 September 2026 replaced it. For Americans, the visa-free stay is now 30 days.

Some passports get a different number of days through their own deals with Thailand. For a US passport, it is 30.

Can you extend a visa-free stay in Thailand?

The official pages we could read on 18 October 2026 do not say. Thai embassy pages send questions about more time to the Immigration Bureau, once you are in Thailand. The Immigration Bureau's own website did not load for us that day.

So we leave this one open. If you need more than 30 days, the visas below are the routes Thailand's embassies describe.

How can Americans stay in Thailand longer?

With a visa. These are the three main ones, from the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. and a Thai consulate document, read on 18 October 2026:

VisaWho it is forHow longFee in Washington
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)Remote workers, freelancers and Thai culture activities5-year visa, 180 days per entryUSD 400
Non-Immigrant O-APeople aged 50 or over, with no work1 yearUSD 200
Non-Immigrant EDStudents90-day visa, then extended in ThailandUSD 80

Fees and papers differ from one embassy to the next. The Thai consulate in Dubai, for example, charges AED 1,500 for the DTV.

Can remote workers live in Thailand?

Yes, with the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). The Washington embassy lists it for "Workcation (Digital nomad/remote worker/foreign talent/freelancer)" and for Thai activities such as Muay Thai and cooking classes.

  • Money. Bank statements for the last three months, each ending with at least THB 500,000 (the Washington page also says USD 16,000).
  • Length. The visa is valid for 5 years. A Thai consulate document on the foreign ministry's server lists 180 days per entry and one extension of up to 180 days.
  • Family. A husband or wife, and children under 20, can get their own DTV.

Compare it with other countries on the Thailand digital nomad visa page. If you are new to working this way, read how to become a digital nomad.

Can Americans retire in Thailand?

Yes, from age 50, with the Non-Immigrant O-A visa. It lets you stay for 1 year, and work of any kind is not allowed. The Washington embassy page lists these money rules:

  • Savings. At least THB 800,000 in the bank for the last three months.
  • Or income. At least THB 65,000 a month, or savings and income that add up to THB 800,000 a year.
  • US dollar figures. For the upload, the same page asks for USD 30,000 in the bank or USD 2,500 a month.
  • Health insurance. For your whole stay, with cover of at least THB 3,000,000 or USD 100,000 a year.

See the full rules on the Thailand retirement visa page.

Can you study in Thailand?

Yes, with a Non-Immigrant ED visa. The Washington embassy lists it for school, university, short Thai or English courses and Muay Thai training.

The visa is valid for 90 days. For most study, it asks for bank statements ending with at least USD 4,000 each month for three months. Short courses and Muay Thai need USD 1,000. For more time, the embassy says to contact the Immigration Bureau once you are in Thailand. Compare it on the Thailand student visa page.

Do Americans need an ETA for Thailand?

Not that we could confirm. On 18 October 2026, we found no official Thai page that says an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) is in use for US passports.

Rules like this can start at short notice. One simple setup is to check the Thai embassy or consulate pages again in the week before you fly.

Where else can Americans go without a visa?

Many places, and each one counts days its own way. Europe, for example, shares one count across the Schengen countries. See how long Americans can stay in Europe.

Our US passport page lists the places that let you in without a visa, with each rule's official source. For longer moves, start with the easiest countries to move to from the US.
