The short version
- Americans can enter Germany without a visa and apply for a residence permit from inside the country.
- The main routes are a skilled job and EU Blue Card, freelance work, study, and family.
- Germany is in the Schengen area, so a visit alone is capped at 90 days in any 180.
- Germany now allows dual citizenship, and citizenship comes after years of legal residence.
Can Americans move to Germany?
Yes. US citizens have an unusual advantage: they can enter Germany visa-free and apply for a residence permit after arrival, rather than applying at a consulate first. Germany's Residence Ordinance, section 41 lists the United States among the countries whose nationals may do this. You still need a lawful reason to stay, such as work or study. We last checked these sources in October 2026.
A plain visit is different. Germany is in the Schengen area, so without a permit you get 90 days in any 180. Our Schengen calculator works out your days, and how long Americans can stay in Europe explains the count.
What are the main routes?
| Route | Who it suits |
|---|---|
| EU Blue Card | Graduates with a German job offer above a set salary. |
| Skilled worker visa | People with a recognised qualification and a job. |
| Freelance permit | Self-employed people in the liberal professions. |
| Study permit | People with a place at a German university. |
| Family reunion | Spouses and children of residents or citizens. |
The EU Blue Card is the fastest path for professionals with a job offer. The official Make it in Germany EU Blue Card page, run by the federal government, lists the salary thresholds and the jobs that qualify.
Can you move as a freelancer?
Yes. A residence permit for self-employment covers freelancers in the liberal professions, such as writers, teachers, designers and some consultants. Section 21 of the Residence Act sets the rule, and you show that your work can support you. The length varies by city. Our Germany freelance visa page has the detail, and the official self-employment guide lists the documents.
Can you move to study?
Yes. With a place at a German university, you apply for a study residence permit under section 16b of the Residence Act. The first permit usually runs for one to two years and renews for the course. Germany's public universities charge low or no tuition, which is part of the draw. See our Germany student visa page for the money you must show.
Can you become a German citizen?
Citizenship comes after several years of legal residence, a language level and other tests. Since 27 June 2024 Germany allows dual citizenship, so you do not have to give up a US passport. If your family tree runs through Germany, you may already have a claim: see dual citizenship for the US and Germany and Germany citizenship by descent.
Each permit has its own income and document rules, and they change, so confirm yours on the official pages before you move.
