What do I need for the Austria freelance visa?
The official page asks for: written contract for self-employed work over 6 months, health insurance that covers all risks in Austria, proof of a home in Austria, proof of income to live on and criminal record extract from home country.
How much money do I need for the Austria freelance visa?
A fixed, regular income of your own at the ASVG standard rate. For 2026 that is EUR 1,308.39 a month for a single person, EUR 2,064.12 for a couple and EUR 201.88 more per child.
How long can I stay on the Austria freelance visa?
Valid for as long as the contract runs, up to 12 months. Can be renewed for up to 12 months at a time while the conditions are still met. Apply in Austria before it runs out, at the earliest 3 months before.
How much does the Austria freelance visa cost?
Application fee EUR 218 (EUR 212 for applications made before 1 January 2026).
Who can apply for the Austria freelance visa?
Open to people from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. For non-EU nationals with a written contract to do a set piece of self-employed work for a client in Austria for more than six months. It is for a stay that ends, not for settling. Citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland can already live in Austria without this visa.
Can I bring my family?
Family reunification is not possible on this permit.
What work can I do on the Austria freelance visa?
Covers the self-employed work in the contract. Work can start only once the permit card is collected.
How do I apply?
In person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Visa-free nationals may also apply in Austria during their visa-free stay. No set time on the permit page. The general rule is a decision without undue delay and within six months at most.
