What do I need for the Portugal freelance visa?
The official page asks for: a service contract or written proposal for services, proof of professional skill if the job is regulated, a criminal record certificate, travel insurance covering medical costs, tax and Social Security registration (for the permit) and a declaration of your home address (for the permit).
How much money do I need for the Portugal freelance visa?
Means of subsistence are based on the minimum monthly wage, EUR 920 in 2026, for the first adult. Add 50% for each extra adult and 30% for each child. Money from a service contract or written proposal can count.
How long can I stay on the Portugal freelance visa?
The D2 visa is valid for 4 months to apply for the permit. The first residence permit then lasts two years from the date the card is issued. Yes, for periods of three years at a time.
How much does the Portugal freelance visa cost?
EUR 110 for the national visa. AIMA charges its own fees for the residence permit, set out in its fee table.
Who can apply for the Portugal freelance visa?
Open to people from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. For people from outside the EU who want to live in Portugal and work for themselves, for example in a liberal profession with a contract or written offer for services. The same visa also covers entrepreneurs who invest in Portugal. Citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland can already live in Portugal without this visa.
Can I bring my family?
A residence permit holder can ask AIMA for family reunification. Once approved, family members apply for their own residence visa.
What work can I do on the Portugal freelance visa?
Self-employed work. The holder can also take a job by asking AIMA to replace the residence card.
How do I apply?
The visa at the Portuguese embassy or consulate that covers the applicant's nationality or country of residence. The residence permit in person at an AIMA office in Portugal, by appointment. The legal deadline for a decision on a residence visa is 60 days.
