The basics

How a freelance visa works.

A freelance visa lets you live in a country and run your own work there, as a freelancer or sole trader. Many countries call it a self-employment permit.

  • 14 of the 31 ask for a business plan or proof of clients, such as contracts or letters of intent.
  • You need money to live on. 12 of the 31 set a figure for income or savings; the rest check it case by case.
  • Many ask for a trade licence or registration, health insurance and a home address.
  • The permit covers your own work. A job for an employer usually needs separate permission.
  • 31 of the 31 can be renewed if your work keeps going.
  • Each country has its own tax rules for the self-employed. Check them before you go.
