What do I need for the Portugal retirement visa?
The official page asks for: proof of pension or passive income, travel insurance with medical cover, criminal record certificate, passport valid 3 months beyond the return date and proof of a home in Portugal (for the permit).
Do I need health insurance?
Travel insurance that covers medical care, urgent care and repatriation is needed for the visa. For the residence permit you need health insurance or proof that the national health service covers you.
Can I work on the Portugal retirement visa?
The visa is for people who live on a pension or passive income, not on work in Portugal. Other visas cover work.
How long do I need to spend in Portugal?
The official visa and permit pages do not state how long you must stay in Portugal each year.
Does the Portugal retirement visa lead to permanent residence?
After 5 years with a temporary residence permit you can apply for permanent residence. You must show basic Portuguese, for example an A2 certificate.
How long does the Portugal retirement visa last?
The residence visa lasts 4 months and allows two entries, so you can apply for the residence permit in Portugal. The first permit then lasts 2 years. Yes, for 3 years at a time.
How much does the Portugal retirement visa cost?
EUR 110 for the visa. The residence permit from AIMA has its own fees.
Who can apply for the Portugal retirement visa?
Open to people from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. People who live on a pension or on income they do not work for, such as rent, investments or royalties.
Can I bring my family?
A spouse or partner, minor children, dependent adult children who study in Portugal and dependent parents can apply as family members who come with you.
How do I apply?
At a Portuguese embassy or consulate, then at AIMA in Portugal for the residence permit. The legal deadline for a decision on the visa is 60 days.
