How much income do I need for the Spain retirement visa?
4 times the IPREM, EUR 2,400 a month in 2026 (the IPREM is EUR 600 a month). Each family member in your care adds 1 IPREM, EUR 600 a month. Instead of a regular income you can show money to cover the whole first year: 12 months at EUR 2,400, which is EUR 28,800, plus EUR 7,200 for each family member.
Is there an age limit for the Spain retirement visa?
The official page sets no age limit.
What do I need for the Spain retirement visa?
The official page asks for: proof of income or money, health insurance, criminal record certificate for the last 5 years, medical certificate and passport valid for at least 1 year.
Do I need health insurance?
Public or private health insurance from a company allowed to work in Spain, covering everything Spain's public health system covers. A registered S1 form is also accepted.
Can I work on the Spain retirement visa?
You may not work or run a business in Spain on this permit.
How long do I need to spend in Spain?
To renew the permit you must have lived in Spain for more than 183 days in the calendar year.
Does the Spain retirement visa lead to permanent residence?
After 5 years of legal, continuous residence you can apply for long-term residence. Absences of up to 6 months at a time, and 10 months in total, do not break the 5 years.
How long does the Spain retirement visa last?
The first permit lasts 1 year. The visa is valid for 1 year, and you apply for a foreigner identity card within 1 month of arrival. Yes, for 2 years at a time.
How much does the Spain retirement visa cost?
A visa fee that depends on your nationality, plus a residence permit fee (form 790 code 052). Both are paid in local money; the Spanish embassy in Washington lists the permit fee as USD 13.
Who can apply for the Spain retirement visa?
Open to people from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. People who want to live in Spain without working, on a pension, other regular income or their own money.
Can I bring my family?
A spouse or partner, unmarried minor children, and adult children who cannot support themselves because of a disability or their health.
How do I apply?
At the Spanish consulate for the area where you live. The visa and the first residence permit are handled together. The legal period for a decision is 2 months from the day after you apply, longer if an interview or more documents are needed.
