First stay

Renewal
You can ask for a new permit while the old one is valid, or within 90 days after it ends. From 15 September 2026, renewal papers must be in Latvian.
Work while you study
20 hours a weekYou may work up to 20 hours a week, or 40 hours a week in study breaks, for any employer. Full-time master's and doctoral students without a study break may work without limits.
After you graduate
Up to 9 monthsMaster's and doctoral graduates with a state-recognised diploma can get a 9-month permit if they apply no later than 3 months after the study permit ends.

Several feesEUR 160 to review the application in 30 days, and EUR 75 to register the permit in 30 days. Faster review costs more.
Processing time
The decision is due within 30 days; it can be extended, but to no more than four months from when all papers are in.

The official page asks for: study contract with an accredited university or college, invitation approved by PMLP, criminal record certificate (age 14+), valid health insurance policy and passport copy and photo, as well as the money to live on.
